Updating your tired looking ceiling by removing popcorn

More and more people these days are removing popcorn from their ceilings. Popcorn ceiling removal is becoming very popular.

The problem with these textured ceilings is the look dated if nothing else. Maintenance and stucco ceilings is much harder if you had a water leak that if it was a plain flat ceiling.

For example, if you have some water damage on a popcorn ceiling there are a number of steps that have to be taken before you can achieve an original look. I was now depending on the size of the damage. For example, if you have a spot that is let’s say the size of a small pizza and it needs to be replaced because there is softness in the drywall possibly even a piece missing that you have to replace the piece with a new piece of drywall. Then you have to tape and plaster the fresh piece of drywall into the ceiling. Then you have to prime the repair.

Now that you have the ceiling repaired you have to spray popcorn onto the drywall repair. Sometimes if the ceiling has been sprayed more densely then it is more than likely that the repair has to be sprayed a second time to make it look similar to the surrounding popcorn. Since the new sprayed popcorn will dry to a different shade of white is more than likely that the entire ceiling will have to be repainted.

 

As you can see from the steps involved in repairing a popcorn ceiling it is quite complicated. And you are still left with a ceiling that has the same maintenance issues. Why not simply remove the stucco from the ceiling and make a nice flat smooth ceiling.

The cost of the repair will greatly offset the cost of popcorn ceiling removal.
